so... that last director i think was there for 05-06 and 06-07. while not native she is a sincere ally and dear friend. the reason that she was director when she was is because no one would step up and sga was, as they say, going to put the agency in a state of "dormancy" as oppose to terminate it. we discussed the issue before i left cause we both had serious issues with both options. a non native director or the end of the years of hard work folks before us had put in. we decided that it was a worthy attempt to help continue with the group and that others would join in and start filling up leadsership positions. we also pushed for native faculty and a native studies concentration if not a full out minor or ideally a major with native languages taught. unfortuantely, the present is the current situation.

so. my reply is a bit out of date. back between 2000-2005, there was no recruiting. when i left in 2005 out of approx. 45,000 fsu students only 114 self identified as native and of those if i remember correctly less than 6 were seminole. half and half oklahoma and florida.
i believe the university still claims to do outreach but who knows how real that is. i´m sure since the mascot issue heated up in summer of 2005, right after i left, that the florida seminole tribe inc. and the university may have something established now but i doubt its sincerity.
in terms of the mascot and calling our racism in the university it would sort of be counter effective to their olde skool arguments of "its all ok". they don´t want many native folks cause well.... the something may just happen on that campus. just some thoughs a 1am from abya yala. take care.

Gina,

Seems like "par for the course" with the FSU admin. It continues as always.
